Defying Gravity and Fear

This past week my father-in-law has been in town for a visit and a chance to see a Pennsylvania fall. Unfortunately, he kind of missed all the lovely colors and leaves, but Jay and I have been showing him all that Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas have to offer. Yesterday we took a fun adventure to Bedford County, PA, where we searched for and found the elusive but famous Gravity Hill, among other things. Gravity Hill is a small road in the middle of nowhere on which cars and vehicles role uphill. You really have to experience it first hand to feel how weird it is. I tried taking videos, but they just don’t convey the feeling. I’m sure it’s some optical illusion…but it’s a pretty incredible one at that!

On our return trip home, we visited a much more somber place–the Flight 93 crash site and memorial. I felt chills as I read the phone calls and accounts of the brave passengers who defied the terrorists and their own fears to try to save their lives and the lives of many others. I only hope I would have that kind of bravery in such a situation. So today’s photos are a mix of mirth and sorrow.

Listening closely, Jay hears the laws of physics shattering around him.

Defying gravity…for a few milliseconds.
