One of the strangest things you quickly notice on Kauai is the abundance of wild chickens. They’re everywhere–wandering around the resort, hanging out in fields, eating along the side of the highways, and pecking about on the beaches. The only place I haven’t seen them is crossing the road.
According to Wikipedia, the chickens were brought by the original Polynesian settlers. I guess they got out and have ever since enjoyed a delightfully free life without fear of the slaughterhouse. I must say, though, that it’s kind of bizarre to be awoken by the sound of a rooster crowing in the morning.
