Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas!

When it comes to birthday dates, I think my sister got the short end of the stick. Sure, getting a precious baby on Christmas Eve must be delightful to the parents and grandparents, but the poor child is forever doomed to their birthday being overshadowed by a much more exciting holiday. This is the case for my dear sister, Martha.

Growing up, true friends would give her two presents–one for her birthday, one for Christmas–but many people would skimp and give her a one for two gift with a hurried “happy birthday merry Christmas” scrawled across the present. Lame.

The other main disadvantage to having a Christmas Eve birthday is that you never, ever get to celebrate your birthday at school. Which means you never get to milk that day for all the attention, cake, and gifts you can get. And you can forget ever getting to have your friends together for a party. They’re all off with their families for the holiday.

So while I grew up envying my big sister for most everything else (she was older and got to do everything first), I never envied her birthday date.

This year, I wish I could be with her in person to wish her Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas (Hi Marfa!), but since an ocean separates us, I’ll just have to wish her Happy Birthday in type.

Martha, have a very happy birthday! I love you and miss you!

And Merry Christmas to everyone else!

This is my most recent photo of Martha–taken a year and half ago in England when my newest nephew was just a tiny speck and my oldest nephew was just beginning to talk.
