Pittsburgh By Stairs | Hanging with Friends

This past weekend a good photographer friend of mine, Sherry, came to visit me and Milla with her husband. Sherry and I were on the same team at the Foundation Workshop, so we share a lot of memories of a challenging but rewarding experience. It’s always fun to have friends come to visit because we get to play the tourist in Pittsburgh and enjoy this city’s great features.

On Monday, Milla, Sherry, and I did some exploring (as photographers are wont to do) on Pittsburgh’s South Side Slopes. I hadn’t ever done much walking (or should I say climbing?) in this part of town. Did you know that Pittsburgh has 712 public stairways with a total of 44,645 steps? That’s a lot of steps! And some of the steps are actually labeled as streets on maps.

The steps are a nod to Pittsburgh’s industrial past when workers regularly used the staircases to commute from their homes on the hills to the factories along the rivers. Today the staircases are largely falling into disrepair…but they sure make for some great and interesting exercise. Forget the Stairmaster…start climbing Pittsburgh’s hills! As an aside, I think the slopes and stairs would make for a fun engagement session!

Here are just a few photos from our adventures.
