Welcome Back to Winter

Minute after minute, day after day, year after year, the waves crash and churn against the beach. The sound of their breaking echoes along the sand. In another almost seemingly unending way, the tradewinds blow against the coast, causing palm trees to clap their leaves and brushing my hair into my eyes and mouth. I sit on a bench, face turned to the sun, eyes closed and listening. Listening to the water, the wind, and wishing I could make the seconds drag out longer.

The eternal warmth of the tropical isle belies reality. Or at least, what I know to be real. I suppose if I had lived there my whole life, I wouldn’t think it strange to get a tan in December.

But those seconds passed away, and it was time to go back home, back to reality–and winter.

Despite the chilly welcome we received upon our return to Pittsburgh, I am happy to be back home. Well, mostly. I wouldn’t have minded if that nice weather had followed us back. But it didn’t. Instead, I have lovely white snow flakes to keep me company outside my window as I try to catch up on work. And Astin. Dogs are great because they make coming home so much easier. It’s nice to know you’ve been missed!

And since it is winter (almost officially), Astin will be spending the next 4 months under the covers probably 23 hours a day. So much for having company.

Oh well, it’s good to be back home!
