Putting Pen to Paper…or Postcards

A couple of months ago I ordered some of my favorite photos from my travels as custom postcards to send to family and friends. I included deliciously tropical images from our vacation in Kauai, Hawaii last November, as well as some favorites from our travels to England, Scotland, and Wales two summers ago.

And then I promptly let them sit on my desk. I had forgotten how foreign it feels to pick up a pen and write a real letter. It’s sad, really. I used to love receiving letters (way back in the day!). When I moved to Russia as a child, my best friend Bonnie would write and send me hand-made stationary. I can’t imagine kids today making stationary for their friends. When everyone is just a few taps on the phone or keyboard away, why bother writing something with pen and paper?

Finally, a letter I received from my “adopted” grandma, Bama, prompted me to sit down and write a response today. Although Bama is not related to me in any way, shape, or form by blood–she’s been a close friend and mother to my Mom for so many years that she might as well be family. I have many fond memories of her and her old poodle JJ coming to visit us when we lived in Texas. Are these the only kind of folks left who write letters?

One more last pathetic admission–my arm hurt while writing the letter. Yes, I am that out of shape when it comes to writing with a pen. I guess that means only one thing–I need to start using the rest of the postcards!
