OK, I’ll admit it. I can’t say it was the best surprise ever, but it definitely ranks up there for me. When my Mom signed up to walk the Susan G. Komen 3-day walk this November, I was so proud of her, and I wished I could join her. Unfortunately, I was already booked for a wedding that weekend, so I knew I couldn’t do it. I would just try to help her however I could, and thanks to the support of many of you blog readers, my Mom raised over $2,300 for the walk. Not only was I proud of her for raising the full amount, but I was also impressed by her dedication to training. I so wished there was another way I could support her.
Then I realized there was one more way I could show support. While I couldn’t walk it with her, I could surprise her at the finish on Sunday. The wheels started turning, and with the help of my best friend’s mother–Thanks Mrs. Z for picking me up from the airport!–and some strategizing with my younger brother Albert, I was able to pull off a great surprise.
My brother, his friend, and I showed up at the last cheer station and waited for her to come by. She had no idea I was going to be there. And though I had my camera in hand ready for her appearance, when she came around the corner, I just ran to her and hugged her. Best surprise ever.
I’m so proud of you Mommy!
The next day I flew out to Kansas City, where I’m attending the Foundation Conference for the next couple of days. So, stay tuned for me posts when I get back to Pittsburgh. For now, enjoy these few photos from the walk.

nancy Schwarz - Mary, How did I miss that you were raising funds for your mom’s walk??? I would have loved to have helped!! Just remember that the men in our family don’t tell much of anything. I know your mom was thrilled to pieces when she saw you. You are so precious. Way to go!
marfa - Any chance you could email me that last photo of the three of you? I’d love to print & frame it since I don’t have any good recent photos of y’all.
Christina Montemurro - Awww – how wonderful of you Mary to make this trip for your mom! She must have been so thrilled and shocked to see you there.
