Wedding Makeup Artists | Should you hire one?

As a bride planning and organizing the details of your wedding day, it can quickly become overwhelming to decide what things are must-haves and what services or items you can do without for your wedding. Probably one of those services you might be on the fence about is hiring a professional makeup artist. Is it worth it to invest in a professional makeup artist?

From my experience witnessing a lot of getting ready sequences, I would say yes, for most brides, it’s worth it. Unless you are planning on only wearing very minimal makeup or are very skilled in applying it yourself, I would recommend hiring a professional. Not only will a professional makeup artist have the right tools, experience, and know-how to create a look that’s perfect for you, they will also probably take a load of stress off your shoulders. All you have to do is sit there and relax as they do their work, which is way better than trying to apply mascara as you stress over being late to the ceremony!

Why is makeup for your wedding different from your regular wear? Well, quite simply, you are dressing the rest of yourself up–donning a beautiful wedding dress, gorgeous shoes, and having incredible hair–to not have your makeup match would be silly! Of course, the goal is always to have your makeup compliment your natural beauty, and it should never be so much that you don’t recognize yourself. A good makeup artist knows this and will work with you to create the perfect look. Many makeup artists even have trial runs to ensure everything goes smoothly on the wedding day. A professional also recognizes that you will be photographed on your wedding day probably more than any other day of your life–they will make sure everything looks good for your photos, too.

So, if you’re looking to hire a professional makeup artist in Pittsburgh for your wedding, I’ve added a few names of artists I’ve worked with and recommend on my favorite Pittsburgh vendors page. Definitely check them out and be sure to book early!

Now for a few examples of brides who went with professional makeup artists–you can see the look is both very natural and stunning.

natalie - Lisa Johnson (Kiss and Make-Up) was the first or second “vendor” I reserved for our wedding – – – she did my sister’s wedding (including bridal party) and we all looked fantastic! So worth the investment!!!

Kara - I was very glad I went with a professional make-up artist. Not only did she know what she was doing but it was great fun, too! It added to the fun and wonder of a great day.

Evonne - Great article Mary!! I know when I was planning the wedding from far away that I was searching for recommendations like this to help in deciding on “who” to hire for hair and make up. Rachael Ryan is amazing!! I recommend her in a heartbeat. Fabulous, professional, and just a sweetheart. Any bride would be lucky and thrilled with her work.
